Srinagar: No doubt, our planet is very sacred to all mankind, so it has become a ritual to celebrate April 22 as ‘World Earth Day’ all over the globe every year and Environmentalists, Scientists and Social Activists organize functions and seminars to give long sermons to Mother Earth, but there is no let-up in the emission of greenhouse harmful gases from Industrial Sectors, especially in advanced countries of the world. It has come to light that in USA alone coal burnt Plants are emitting above three billion tons of carbon dioxide and its automobiles are discharging above two billion tons every year. The scenario prevailing in European countries including India is quit dismal.
Although Man of today claims to have made advances in the technological arena and plans to conquer space completely, yet the ground realities are altogether different. Now large number of scientists of the world have warned that global warming is going to change life around the world and that too region by region. Their report suggests that a 3.6 degree increase in mean air temperature could decrease rain fed rice yields by 5 to 12 percent in China and 10 percent in Bangaldesh besides wheat production to one third by the year 2050. The reduction in production coupled with population explosion could deprive nearly above 50 million people of food by 2020. The number of affected people is likely to go up many times by 2080.
As regards India, it is likely to experience water shortage as the Himalayan glaciers are depleting, paving way for floods due to rise in sea level. Uncontrolled climatic change is bound to hasten an environmental and economic catastrophe, which shall be higher than the global average. Such a change reinforces necessity for curbing such tendency at international level as, otherwise, it will have serious consequences for food and water security in Asia. But Africa shall be hard hit. The fallout from a warming planet shall be flooding, outbreak of diseases and economic crisis in the world’s poorest continent. It is predicted that wheat may disappear from the continent by the year 2080.
It is also predicted that in Europeans Mediterranean region, climatic change will reduce power generation, raise sea levels in coastal regions and thus leave millions of people with water crisis. By 2070, nearly 30 million Europeans are expected to be suffering water shortages. The projected statistical data is quite disturbing and flashes red signal across the world population, including our region.
“ As regards our State of Jammu and Kashmir, the future scenario is expected to be more alarming as food production areas are shrinking at a fast pace. A large segment of farmers’ population has remained engaged in mass conversion of paddy growing areas into commercial establishments and other cash crops so food producing area has undergone a gradual reduction. Although the State judiciary has issued directions to the Executive, yet there is no perceptible change at the ground level. We have already massive structures on Abi-Awal and Abi-Doum areas besides low-lying areas have been filled up for raising structures. This has reduced area of flood absorption basins, creating thereby favourable conditions for floods. We have also gone for massive deforestation and removed the vegetal cover of the forests, which has affected our ecology in a big way. We know forests have a direct impact on ecological equation and once the equation is disturbed, results can be adverse. This has not only happened in our State, but there are similar stories flashing from different parts of the world. It is the human hand which disturbs Nature’s phenomena and ultimately hastens doom for Allah’s creation”, said a group of elderly persons of Kashmir Valley.
Hence People urge Central/ State Governments and International Community to minimize emission of Pollutants into the atmosphere. It is equally high time that we in Jammu and Kashmir State read the red signal and adopt all remedial measures to counteract the ill-effects of global warming.
